Focusing on the vision of chastity and romantic love embodied in a major allegorical painting by Titian (ca. 1488-1576) and exploring his treatment of the subjects in the context of 16th-century Venetian art and culture, this substantial catalogue presents fine reproductions and detailed analyses of Sacred and Profane Love (ca. 1515) and 27 other paintings by Titian and such artists as Giovanni Bellini, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Sebastiano del Piombo while also documenting some 115 prints, drawings and sculptures of the period. Augmented by texts describing the recent restoration of Sacred and Profane Love and the technical analysis of seven other paintings produced by Titian from 1510 to 1515, fifteen essays discuss the painter's early career, survey the varied critical interpretations of the featured work, examine its relationship to artistic developments of the time, and consider its themes in the light of matrimonial conventions and conceptions of femininity and morality in Cinquecento Venice.
