Documenting a major exhibition that reunited works from the extensive collections formed during the 16th and 17th centuries by the renowned Farnese family, rulers of Parma and Piacenza from 1545 to 1731, this substantial catalogue presents fine reproductions and often extensive individual analyses of the nearly 300 pieces featured in the show, among them 124 paintings and 23 drawings produced primarily by such Cinquecento artists as Titian, Parmigianino, the Carracci, Sebastiano del Piombo, Cambiaso and El Greco, 25 sculptures, and some 120 ceramic and silver objects, cameos, weapons, medals and coins. Twelve scholarly essays include discussions of the history of the Farnese family and their activities as patrons and collectors in Parma and Rome as well as texts individually profiling the principal sections of their collections.
