SALVO. Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart, 1994. Published in association with Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. 180 pp. with 92 ills. (69 col.). 30 x 26 cm. LC 95-176219 ISBN 389322646X Bilingual in German and English (complete entries in German only).
Provides excellent reproductions of more than 70 works produced from 1970 to 1994 by Italian painter Salvo (Salvatore Mangione, b. 1947), a founder of the avant-garde Nuovi-nuovi group whose output since the mid-1970s has consisted largely of vibrantly hued primitivist landscapes that frequently incorporate reductively stylized images of classical architecture. Four critical essays exploring the simultaneously archaic and futuristic character of Salvo's iconography and analyzing his early conceptually oriented photo-based work are augmented by a text in which the artist employs epigrammatic phrases and rhetorical questions to illuminate his singular approach to painting.
