Providing a fine pictorial overview of the career of a German painter whose naturalist oeuvre reflects in particular the influence of Leibl and Courbet, this catalogue features full-page reproductions of 119 landscapes, portraits, still lifes and other paintings produced by Trubner from 1869 to 1915. Six essays include a discussion of the artist's stylistic development in the context of avant-garde trends in German painting of the late 19th century, an examination of classical, literary and religious themes in his work, an assessment of his draughtsmanship, and a description of his relationships with art dealers and critics of his time.
