A scholarly study of the emergence of new concepts of picture framing as reflected in the proliferation of artist-designed frames during the latter half of the 19th century, this catalogue presents illustrations of more than 150 framed paintings by Bocklin, Hunt, Rossetti, Pissarro, Van Gogh, Klimt, Signac, Toorop, Picasso and other figures who viewed their frames as significant and inseparable components of their works. Eleven substantial essays discuss the evolving forms and functions of the frame in 19th- and early 20th-century European art and examine in detail the innovative framing practices of the Pre-Raphaelites, the Vienna Secessionists, Les Vingt, the Cubists and such individual artists as Whistler, Degas and Seurat.
