Documenting the first Johannesburg Biennale, an ambitious multi-site exhibition focused on international issues of cultural identity in the post-colonial era, this catalogue showcases a diverse array of recent paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and mixed-media pieces by artists from some 60 countries, among them many emerging figures from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Illustrations of selected pieces by the exhibiting artists accompanied by brief commentaries on their works or on contemporary artistic trends in their home countries are prefaced by fifteen essays primarily addressing the process of social and political reorientation in post-apartheid South Africa and the status of artists in marginalized or multi-ethnic cultures.
