Examining the distinctive realist oeuvre of a Dutch painter whose works consist primarily of symbolic, often illusionistic self-portraits, portraits and still lifes, this catalogue features excellent reproductions and detailed analyses of some 30 paintings and ten drawings by Ket (1902-1940), many of the pieces reflecting his interest in Northern Renaissance painting and his affinities with the Magic Realists. A substantial critical overview of the stylistic and thematic concerns central to Ket's introspective vision and an anthology of excerpts from his correspondence are accompanied by a selectively illustrated catalogue raisonne of the more than 500 paintings, drawings and prints produced by the artist over the course of his brief career.
