Reviewing in detail the evocative oeuvre of a major figure in the Arte Povera movement, this catalogue showcases more than 125 works produced by Italian artist Merz (b. 1925) from 1966 to 1994, including numerous large-scale installations incorporating such diverse elements as bundles of sticks, igloo-like structures covered with glass or stone, sequences of neon numerals, spiral arrangements of tables, and monumental paintings of archetypal animal forms. Excellent pictorial documentation of the featured pieces is augmented by two essays discussing the existential and poetic characteristics of Merz's work, ten reprinted critical texts, and four interviews with the artist.
