MARISA MERZ. Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee national d'art moderne/Centre de creation industrielle, Paris, 1994. Contemporains: Monographies. 286 pp. with 123 ills. (47 col.). 21 x 17 cm. LC 94-218046 ISBN 2858507406 In French; three essays also in English.
The first substantial examination of the oeuvre of Italian sculptor Merz, this catalogue presents illustrations of more than 100 diverse works produced by the artist from 1966 to 1993, the selection ranging from primitivistic clay heads and semi-abstract studies of the human face to site-specific installations incorporating simplified furniture forms, found materials and intricately woven nets of copper wire. Three essays that note Merz's association with the Arte Povera movement while emphasizing the individualistic nature of her imagery and thematic concerns are augmented by several reprinted critical texts and a series of tributes to the artist.
