CARLO CARRA, 1881-1966. Ed. by Augusta Monferini. Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome, 1994. Published by Electa, Milan. 548 pp. with 648 ills. (121 col.). 28 x 25 cm. LC 96-107490 ISBN 8843550918 In Italian.
This extensive survey of the oeuvre of celebrated Italian artist Carra features full-page reproductions and individual examinations of some 120 paintings dating from 1900 to 1966, including examples of the Divisionist, Futurist and Metaphysical compositions he produced prior to 1920 as well as many of the somber, naturalistic landscapes and figurative works that dominated his output during the last four decades of his career. Augmented by an analysis of the artist's draughtsmanship and illustrations of more than 200 of his drawings, sixteen scholarly essays provide lengthy appraisals of the stylistic progression of Carra's work and discussions of such topics as his relationship to the Pittura Metafisca and Novecento movements, his mural projects of the 1920s and 30s, the parallels between his career and that of Andre Derain, his writings on art, and the classical influences reflected in his painting.
