OP ASGER JORN, 1914-1973. Troels Andersen et al. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1994. Organized in association with Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, and Louisiana Museum for moderne kunst, Humlebaek. 148 pp. with 259 ills. (57 col., one foldout). 30 x 25 cm. ISBN 9053491414 Bilingual in Dutch and English.
Highlighting the achievements of a celebrated Danish painter who played a prominent role in the CoBrA group and other avant-garde associations, this catalogue documents a major retrospective of more than 100 paintings and some 70 drawings that included many of Jorn's violently gestural compositions combining abstract forms and images of mythic human and animal figures. Fine reproductions of 57 of the exhibited works are accompanied by a detailed chronicle of Jorn's career and two substantial essays that discuss the relationship of his work to progressive movements in postwar European and American art and examine the unorthodox aesthetic theories outlined in his writings.
