A fine pictorial overview of the distinctive oeuvre of Austrian painter Hausner (b. 1914), a prominent figure of the Vienna school of Fantastic Realism, this catalogue presents excellent reproductions of 93 paintings dating from 1935 to 1994 that include numerous striking self-portraits of the artist as Adam as well as precisely rendered tableaux combining symbolic nudes and other figures with iconic objects representing the subconscious and rational components of human identity. Two critical essays exploring the psychological and spiritual dimensions of Hausner's introspective vision are augmented by an essay in which the artist discusses the personal origins and significance of his imagery.
