Highlighting works by several generations of artists whose approaches to photography have mirrored both the expanding role of the medium in art over the past four decades and the changing social climate of the period, this catalogue presents illustrations of 84 diverse photographs, video images and photo-based paintings, prints and installations by 15 noted figures, among them Robert Frank, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Edward Ruscha, John Baldessari, Martha Rosler, Dan Graham, Chantal Akerman, Jeff Wall, Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. Supplemented by critical profiles of the featured artists, six essays address such topics as the inherent ambiguity of the photograph as a document of reality, the moral and political implications of engaged versus detached modes of photographic representation, and the relationship of Warhol's interest in serial reproduction techniques to his exploration of themes of death, celebrity and consumer culture.
