DARIO VILLALBA, 1964-1994. Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Centre Julio Gonzalez, Valencia, 1994. 312 pp. (3 foldout) with 254 ills. (130 col.). 29 x 25 cm. LC 94-240968 ISBN 8448206312 In Spanish; preface, six essays and biographical chronology also in English.
Thoroughly reviewing the provocative oeuvre of a prominent Spanish avant-garde artist whose works since the early 1970s have been based on an inventive fusion of photography and painting, this catalogue presents reproductions of some 175 pieces produced by Villalba (b. 1939) over the past three decades, including life-sized cutout photographs of human figures encapsulated in plastic, collage-like and serial compositions incorporating gesturally overpainted black-and-white images of alienation and suffering, and dynamic abstract "paint snapshots." A lengthy essay by Villalba illuminating the philosophical, social and artistic values central to his vision complements five critical texts examining the independent course of the artist's career, his distinctive adaptation of Pop aesthetics, and the psychological motivations underlying his technical innovations.
