OP DENNIS MILLER BUNKER: AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST. Erica E. Hirshler et al. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1995. Copyright 1994. 190 pp. with 145 ills. (55 col.). 27 x 29 cm. LC 94-79209 ISBN 0878464220 In English.
The first major study of the brief but distinguished career of an American artist whose long-neglected oeuvre encompasses some of the earliest fully Impressionist works produced in the United States, this catalogue presents excellent reproductions of 46 paintings by Bunker (1861-1890) that include numerous landscapes and coastal views as well as veristic society portraits and floral still lifes. Accompanied by a detailed biographical chronology, two substantial essays trace the painter's life and stylistic development from his early studies in New York and Paris through his pivotal association with Sargent and his successful years in Boston while also evaluating his career in the context of the new concepts of art and the artist emerging in late 19th-century American culture.
