Extensively surveys the distinctive figurative oeuvre of noted African American artist Biggers (b. 1924) through a presentation of some 115 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures produced from 1942 to 1994, the selection including striking portraits, expressively realistic depictions of the black experience in the rural South, and images of daily life in African societies as well as symbolic and semi-abstract works from the past two decades that embody visions of cultural solidarity and rebirth. A lengthy account of Biggers's life and career and a critical overview of his stylistic development are supplemented by an examination of his achievements as a muralist and a thematic and iconographic analysis of his 1987 painting Shotguns.
