Highlighting the role of Provence both as a center of naturalist painting in late 19th-century France and as the site of pivotal developments in Post-Impressionist and early modernist art, this catalogue features excellent reproductions and individual discussions of 140 paintings by some 75 artists, including Monticelli, Ziem, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Marquet, Bonnard, Chabaud, Dufy and Matisse. Accompanied by numerous small illustrations of related works, thirteen essays include discussions of the dominance of naturalism in Provencal painting during the last decades of the 19th century and the distinctive styles developed in Marseille, Avignon, Toulon and other cities; an examination of the involvement of regional artists in the Fauve movement; and an overview of the activities of Cezanne, Matisse, Signac, Derain and other figures whose sojourns in Provence marked important transitions in their careers.
