An extensive reappraisal of the oeuvre of an "amateur" French painter whose importance as a major early patron and promoter of his Impressionist colleagues long obscured his own artistic achievements, this substantial catalogue surveys portraits, still lifes, domestic interiors and landscapes produced by Caillebotte (1848-1894) from 1872 to 1894 while also presenting numerous examples of his well-known views of Parisian boulevards and 32 drawings and oil sketches related to two of his most important canvases, Floorscrapers (1875) and Paris Street, Rainy Day (1877). Fine reproductions and lengthy individual discussions of the 85 featured paintings are accompanied by a chronicle of Caillebotte's career, a review of the art historical reception of his work, nine essays examining his principal themes, and an illustrated checklist of the more than 60 paintings and drawings by Degas, Monet and other Impressionists he bequeathed to the French state.
