JIM NUTT. Milwaukee Art Museum, 1994. 172 pp. with 169 ills. (67 col.). 26 x 23 cm. LC 94-35127 ISBN 0944110479 In English.
Thoroughly surveying the provocative oeuvre of Chicago Imagist Nutt (b. 1938), a leading member of the Hairy Who group of the late 1960s, this catalogue presents excellent reproductions of some 65 paintings and 40 drawings that include examples of the artist's early cartoon-like images of grotesque human figures, narrative tableaux from the 1970s and 80s depicting bizarre male and female nudes in sexually charged confrontations, and recent distorted portraits of women that feature highly patterned borders and frames. A lengthy analysis of Nutt's stylistic development supplements two essays that explore the ironic, psychologically ambiguous character of his work and delineate the broad range of artistic traditions informing his distinctive vision, from Surrealism and Pop art to Northern Renaissance portraiture.
