CAMILLE PISSARRO: IMPRESSIONIST INNOVATOR. Joachim Pissarro and Stephanie Rachum. Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1994. 280 pp. with 171 ills. (116 col.). 31 x 23 cm. ISBN 9652781606 Bilingual in English and Hebrew.
Surveys Pissarro's oeuvre through a presentation of some 90 paintings and 40 drawings, watercolors and prints produced by the celebrated French artist (1830-1903) from 1852 to 1903, the selection encompassing sketches executed during his early years in the West Indies; Impressionist landscapes, genre scenes and figure studies; examples of his experimental Neo-Impressionist compositions; portraits of his family; and late urban views. Good reproductions of the featured works (which include numerous rarely exhibited pieces from private collections) are accompanied by a detailed biographical chronology, five brief texts summarizing the principal phases of Pissarro's career, and a substantial essay examining the influence of the painter's early family life and Jewish background on the formation of his anarchistic social and artistic views.
