ROMA 1630: IL TRIONFO DEL PENNELLO (Rome 1630: The Triumph of the Brush). Villa Medici, Accademia di Francia a Roma, Rome, 1994. Published by Electa, Milan. 260 pp. with 94 ills. (29 col.). 28 x 25 cm. LC 95-142333 ISBN 8843550470 Preface, introduction and three essays in French; three essays and complete entries with extensive commentaries in Italian.
Evoking the vibrant artistic atmosphere of early 17th-century Rome through the partial reconstruction of a remarkable 1631 exhibition described in the writings of German artist and theorist Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), this scholarly catalogue thoroughly documents thirteen canvases by Pietro da Cortona, Poussin, Reni, Guercino, Lanfranco, Domenichino, Sandrart and the five other painters included in the original show -- an event modern scholarship has proven did not in fact take place. Substantial texts discussing the featured works and artists supplement seven lengthy essays examining Sandrart's career in Rome and the historical context of his fictional exhibition, the role of Pietro da Cortona in Italian Baroque art, the theory and practice of painting in early Seicento Rome, and the emergence of the informed viewer as an influence on the art world of the period.
