COMMENT: An ambitious study of the important contributions of Spanish artists to the development of Surrealism in the 1920s and 30s, this substantial catalogue presents fine reproductions of some 200 paintings, drawings, sculptures and collages by 47 artists, among them Miro, Dali, Picasso, Gonzalez, Garcia Lorca, Oscar Dominguez, Esteban Frances, Francisco Bores, Remedios Varo and Jose Caballero. Augmented by a detailed chronology of the Spanish Surrealist movement and biographical profiles of the featured artists, six essays include discussions of the distinctive modes of Surrealism developed by regional groups in Madrid, Catalonia, Saragossa and Tenerife, the significance of putrescent and scatological imagery in the work of Dali and other painters, the innovative achievements of Spanish Surrealist sculptors, and the symbolic, landscape-based motifs explored in the early 1930s by painter Benjamin Palencia and sculptor Alberto Sanchez.
