Reviewing the achievements of the Italian-Swiss architect commissioned by Peter the Great in 1706 to oversee the planning and construction of the newly founded capital of the Russian empire, this catalogue features fine illustrations of plans, elevations and other architectural renderings of the military, civil, religious and residential structures designed for St. Petersburg by Trezzini (1670-1734) while also presenting reproductions of early maps and views of the city. Eight essays include discussions of the significance of St. Petersburg in the reign of Peter the Great, examinations of the major designs produced by Trezzini during his influential 30-year career in the city, and profiles of other 18th-century Ticino architects who worked on the project.
