Presenting images from some 30 videotapes and installations created by Viola (b. 1951) from 1976 to 1994, this catalogue features a substantial interview in which the well-known American artist discusses the existential themes and spiritual, perceptual and aesthetic values underlying his work. Three critical texts explore images of the human body in Viola's oeuvre, trace the evolution of his "visionary documentary" style, and examine in detail his video installations Tiny Deaths (1993) and Pneuma (1994).
