An extensive history of the Madrid palace that served as the residence of Spanish monarchs from the reign of Charles V (1500-1558) until its destruction by fire in 1734, this voluminous catalogue features sixteen texts tracing the architectural evolution of the building and its interiors from the 16th to the 18th century; 24 essays that illuminate the activities of Spanish kings as patrons of the arts over the period and the significance of the collections of fine and decorative works they assembled; and three discussions of the Real Alcazar in the context of other European palaces of the time. Accompanying the texts are illustrations of architectural drawings, prints, sculptures, tapestries and other objects and of some 130 paintings (many now housed in the Prado) that include compositions by such major figures as Velazquez, Raphael, Rubens, Titian, Ribera, Van Eyck, Correggio, Jan Brueghel the Elder and Mantegna.
