Exploring Fontana's achievements in the light of her status as a woman artist in late Seicento Bologna, this catalogue presents 33 portraits and religious tableaux by the painter, 14 canvases by her father Prospero, and numerous works by Bartolomeo Passerotti, the Carracci and other figures of the Bolognese art world of her time. Full-page illustrations and scholarly discussions of the featured works are prefaced by three essays that include an examination of Fontana's career and principal themes, an evaluation of self-portraits produced by Fontana, Sofonisba Anguissola and other women artists of late 16th-century Italy, and a historical overview of developments in Bolognese and Roman art and architecture during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585).
