CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH GILLE, 1805-1899. Gerd Spitzer. Gemaldegalerie Neue Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, 1994. Published in association with E.A. Seemann Kunstverlagsgesellschaft mbH, Leipzig. 152 pp. with 133 ills. (48 col.). 30 x 25 cm. LC 95-158262 ISBN 3363006276 In German.
Accompanying the first major exhibition devoted to the long-neglected oeuvre of Dresden painter Gille, this scholarly catalogue presents 93 oils and 40 drawings and prints dating from 1826 to 1890, the selection consisting primarily of dark, atmospheric landscapes and nature studies that reflect both the artist's links to Romanticism and his early exploration of Impressionist techniques. A substantial essay reviewing Gille's career and evaluating the distinctive characteristics of his unconventional style is augmented by commentaries on most of the exhibited works.
