BART VAN DER LECK. Ed. by Toos van Kooten. Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterlo, 1994. 216 pp. with 271 ills. (175 col.). 31 x 25 cm. ISBN 9073313082 In Dutch.
Extensively reviewing the career of a prominent Dutch artist whose individualistic oeuvre bears affinities to the works of Mondrian and the De Stijl group, this catalogue presents illustrations of some 60 paintings, more than 100 watercolors and drawings and nearly 50 ceramic tiles and plates created by Van der Leck (1876-1958) from 1904 to 1958, the selection encompassing early stylized figurative tableaux, pure abstractions composed of geometric shapes in primary colors dating from the 1910s and 20s, and many highly schematic images based on human, animal and still-life motifs. Detailed commentaries on seven key works and series augment an anthology of twenty texts dating from 1904 to 1994 that includes writings by Van der Leck and several substantial critical essays as well as a selection of homages to the artist.
