NEUE SACHLICHKEIT: BILDER AUF DER SUCHE NACH DER WIRKLICHKEIT -- FIGURATIVE MALEREI DER ZWANZIGER JAHRE (Neue Sachlichkeit: Images in Search of Reality -- Figurative Painting of the 1920s). Hans-Jurgen Buderer and Manfred Fath. Stadtische Kunsthalle, Mannheim, 1994. Published by Prestel-Verlag, Munich. 248 pp. with 313 ills. (143 col.). 31 x 24 cm. LC 95-158263 ISBN 3791313797 In German.
An illuminating examination of the provocative mode of realism that rose to prominence in the German art world of the 1920s, this catalogue features fine reproductions of nearly 250 paintings and works on paper by Dix, Grosz, Beckmann, Hubbuch, Schad and some 60 other artists associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, the selection including many striking portraits, caricatures and scathingly satirical images of cabarets, prostitutes and scenes of violence as well as brightly colored cityscapes and still lifes. Eight scholarly essays discuss the development of the Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetic in the context of the turbulent political and social climate of Weimar Germany and closely examine the primary themes and motifs explored by the featured artists.
