YVES KLEIN. Sidra Stich. Museum Ludwig, Cologne, and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf, 1994. Published by Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. 292 pp. with 213 ills. (86 col.). 31 x 25 cm. LC 95-233691 ISBN 3893226575 In English.
A major examination of the life and oeuvre of celebrated French artist Klein (1928-1962), whose provocative concepts and techniques have influenced avant-garde European and American art since the 1950s, this catalogue documents an exhibition of some 140 diverse works produced by Klein from 1954 to 1962, including monochromatic canvases, sponge sculptures and reliefs executed in the striking, unmodulated ultramarine known as "International Klein Blue;" drawings of visionary "architecture of air" environments; and compositions created in performances by paint-covered nude women or with flame-throwing devices. Reproductions of many of the featured works and numerous documentary photographs accompany an extensive twelve-part text that details each phase of Klein's career and explores the spiritual and metaphysical dimensions of his work, discussing such topics as his mural decorations for a theater in Gelsenkirchen (1958-59), his famous "Leap into the Void" performance of 1960, and his role in the founding of the Nouveaux Realistes group.
