A detailed study of modern Argentine art that emphasizes the role of cultural, political and geographical factors in shaping its distinctive character, this catalogue presents some 125 stylistically diverse paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and collages by Xul Solar, Antonio Berni, Raquel Forner and other leading members of the avant garde in prewar Argentina as well as many contemporary works by such figures as Victor Grippo, Luis Benedit and Guillermo Kuitca. Reproductions of the exhibited pieces accompany 16 texts that include substantial discussions of individual artists and examinations of such topics as the interplay of aesthetic and social debates in Buenos Aires in the 1920s and 30s, the emergence of the Madi group and other associations of postwar abstract artists, and the relationship of Argentine art of the 1960s and 70s to the tumultuous political and social changes in the country during the period.
