Focused on Charlot's involvement in artistic developments in Mexico during the 1920s and the central role of Mexican themes in his work, this catalogue features fine reproductions of some 80 paintings, drawings and prints produced by the French-born artist (1898-1979) over the course of his career in Mexico and the United States, the selection including figure studies and narrative images that combine modernist aesthetics with motifs frequently derived from Mayan and Aztec art. Augmented by a brief anthology of critical writings by Charlot, six well-illustrated essays include discussions of his formative years in France, his interest in the ancient civilizations of Mexico, his portrait drawings of Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros and other Mexican artists, and his work as a sculptor and illustrator.
