PETER HUJAR: A RETROSPECTIVE. Ed. by Urs Stahel and Hripsime Visser. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1994. Organized in association with Fotomuseum, Winterthur. Published in association with Scalo Verlag, Zurich. 208 pp. with 121 ills. 30 x 24 cm. ISBN 1881616355 In English.
A fine pictorial survey of the oeuvre of American photographer Hujar (1934-1987), this catalogue features full-page reproductions of 121 works dating from 1963 to 1985, the selection including many portraits of artists, mental patients and transvestites as well as male nudes, animal studies, still lifes and city views. Brief reminiscences by friends and associates of the artist augment three essays that comment on his early career as a fashion photographer and his "outsider" status in the New York art world of the 1970s and 80s, examine the contrasts between his work and the photographs of Arbus and Mapplethorpe, and discuss the subtle classicism and sense of mortality permeating his images.
