Highlighting the achievements of an Italian painter renowned for his influential role in the early development of the Venetian veduta tradition, this catalogue features excellent reproductions and detailed analyses of 59 paintings and 29 etchings by Carlevaris (ca. 1665-1731) along with 42 canvases by Van Wittel, Bellotto, Canaletto, Marieschi and other precursors, contemporaries and followers of the artist. Nine scholarly essays range from examinations of the links among Carlevaris, Van Wittel and northern European artistic traditions and discussions of 18th-century depictions of Venetian festivals and villas to an analysis of Carlevaris's celebrated painting of the regatta staged to celebrate Frederick IV's visit to the city in 1709.
