The first extensive review of the large body of portraits produced by influential American painter and teacher Henri (1865-1929), the leading figure of the Ashcan School in early 20th-century New York, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 60 oils executed from 1898 to 1928 that include formal compositions, portrayals of Henri's friends and colleagues, numerous depictions of children, and expressive images of Spanish dancers, Irish villagers, Native Americans and other diverse individuals encountered by the artist during his frequent travels in the United States and Europe. A substantial chronicle of Henri's work as a portraitist is supplemented by a detailed discussion of the experimental color theories and compositional systems explored in his paintings.
