ANDRE DERAIN: LE PEINTRE DU "TROUBLE MODERNE" (Andre Derain: The Painter of "Trouble moderne"). Musee d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1994. Published by Paris-Musees. 496 pp. with 442 ills. (251 col.). 28 x 23 cm. ISBN 2879001765 In French.
A major reappraisal of the eclectic oeuvre of French artist Derain (1880-1954) and its problematic status in the history of 20th-century art, this catalogue documents an exhibition encompassing 180 paintings, 44 drawings and some 160 sculptures, book illustrations, prints and stage designs, the selection illuminating Derain's pioneering contributions to the Fauvist and Cubist movements and tracing the diverse modes of realism he explored in portraits, landscapes and still lifes over the last four decades of his career. Includes excellent reproductions of the featured works (many accompanied by detailed commentaries) and 15 essays that evaluate the often conflicting aesthetic and intellectual concerns underlying Derain's singular artistic course, examine his relationships with Breton, Vlaminck, Braque and Apollinaire, and discuss such topics as his early interest in African art, his designs for the theater and his work as a sculptor.
