ARDENGO SOFFICI: ARTE E STORIA (Ardengo Soffici: Art and History). Ed. by Ornella Casazza and Luigi Cavallo. Villa di Petriolo, Rignano sull'Arno, 1994. Organized by Comune di Rignano sull'Arno et al. Published by Edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta, Milan. 232 pp. with 175 ills. (101 col.). 27 x 23 cm. LC 95-149919 ISBN 8820211041 In Italian.
Surveying the oeuvre of an Italian artist and critic who played a leading role in early 20th-century avant-garde art in Paris and Milan, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of more than 100 paintings by Soffici (1879-1964) that include Cubist-influenced still lifes and many of the landscape compositions he produced in the decades following his rejection of modernism in the late 1910s. Individual discussions of the featured works (most incorporating excerpts from critical texts) augment two essays examining Soffici's association with progressive art movements prior to 1914 and his involvement in the revival of Italian fresco traditions in the 1920s and 30s.
