NICOLAS POUSSIN, 1594-1665. Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat. Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, 1994. Organized (in association with Royal Academy of Arts, London) and published by Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 560 pp. with 770 ills. (186 col.). 31 x 23 cm. LC 95-145298 ISBN 2711830276 In French.
Accompanying the most extensive of the exhibitions mounted in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Poussin's birth, this massive catalogue features good reproductions and lengthy individual discussions of some 110 paintings and 135 drawings by the renowned French painter as well as illustrations of hundreds of related works by Poussin and other artists. Prefaced by a review of the extensive scholarship on Poussin undertaken since the last major exhibition of his work in 1960 (Worldwide 1307), fourteen essays discuss such topics as the principal themes and subjects of Poussin's paintings, the character of his draughtsmanship, his patronage in Rome and Siena, his relationship to the art academies of his time, his view of religion, and his critical fortunes in France and England during the 18th and 19th centuries. (For the catalogue of the London version of the exhibition, which includes an entirely different text, see Worldwide 24857.)
