Examining Munch's activities during his sojourns in Germany from 1892 to 1908 and illuminating his seminal role in the birth of German Expressionism, this catalogue features fine reproductions of some 70 paintings and 14 prints by the celebrated Norwegian artist (1863-1944) while also presenting 25 works by Bocklin, Stuck, Heckel, Kirchner, Nolde and other painters selected to illustrate the character of turn-of-the-century art in Germany and Munch's influence on its development. Supplemented by an anthology of Munch's letters of the period, twelve essays discuss such topics as the artist's exploration of psycho-sexual themes in the Frieze of Life canvases, the intense critical response to his oeuvre in Germany and his notable exhibitions there in 1892, 1912 and 1927, the role of German printmakers in the dissemination of his graphic works, and his links to the early 20th-century German avant garde.
