MARIO CAVAGLIERI: THE GLITTERING YEARS, 1912-1922. Jewish Museum, New York, 1994. Organized by Galleria dello Scudo, Verona. Published by Edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta, Milan. 228 pp. with 280 ills. (41 col.). 28 x 24 cm. ISBN 8820211092 In English.
Examining the prolific early career of an Italian painter whose individualistic approach to society portraiture suggests the influence of Klimt, Vuillard and Matisse, this catalogue features full-page reproductions and detailed analyses of 35 oils by Cavaglieri (1887-1969) that consist largely of vibrant, heavily impastoed depictions of fashionable women posed in elaborate domestic interiors. Seven essays include discussions of the widely varied sources of Cavaglieri's exuberant style, the vision of women central to his early work, his close ties to artistic developments in Venice during the 1910s, and his exhibitions and critical fortunes in Rome prior to his emigration to France in 1925.
