Thoroughly documenting the first significant exhibition devoted to Potter (1625-1654), the most celebrated animal painter of the Dutch Golden Age, this scholarly catalogue presents 32 paintings, 13 drawings and 15 etchings that include views of grazing livestock, genre depictions of farm and hunting scenes, and painstakingly rendered portraits of cattle and horses. Excellent reproductions and individual examinations of the featured works are prefaced by a biographical essay and two well-illustrated texts discussing the development of Potter's realistic style and assessing his achievements as a draughtsman and printmaker.
