Extensively reviewing the career of prominent German artist Freundlich (1878-1943) from his involvement with the Cubists through his association with such groups as Cercle et Carre and Abstraction-Creation, this catalogue provides full-page reproductions of 32 paintings, some 30 drawings, and 20 prints and sculptures that include examples of his early works as well as many of the lyrical abstract compositions of interlocking forms he produced during the 1920s and 30s. Twelve critical essays discuss such topics as the role of color in Freundlich's artistic vision, the relationship between his paintings and his theories of art, his stained-glass, mosaic and sculptural projects, and his influence on Poliakoff, Esteve and other postwar figures.
