Surveys the oeuvre of renowned Swiss artist Hodler (1853-1918) through a presentation of nearly 60 paintings dating from 1874 to 1918, the selection encompassing early naturalistic genre scenes and portraits, panoramic alpine landscapes, and distinctive allegorical images suffused with Symbolist overtones. Excellent reproductions of the featured works are prefaced by a substantial examination of Hodler's formal and thematic concerns in the context of turn-of-the-century European art and a lengthy essay discussing the artist's career in Geneva and the role of Swiss cultural ideals in shaping the character of his work.
