TOO LATE FOR GOYA: WORKS BY FRANCESC TORRES. Ed. by Marilyn Zeitlin. Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, 1993. Distributed by University of Arizona Press, Tucson. 124 pp. with 78 ills. (50 col., 3 foldout). 31 x 24 cm. ISBN 1879286076 In English; four essays also in Spanish.
Showcasing a selection of provocative, politically engaged works produced from 1990 to 1993 by Spanish-born American artist Torres (b. 1948), this catalogue presents excellent pictorial documentation of sculptural objects, multi-panel displays of over-painted photographs, and five installations that include such diverse elements as miniature tanks, wrecked furniture, large-scale portraits of damaged statues, projected images of historical events, and tapes of network news programs. Accompanied by a text by Torres discussing the concept of collective cultural amnesia he explores in Too Late for Goya (1993) and other installations, three critical essays examine the philosophical foundations of the artist's vision, the development of emblematic and theatrical elements in his oeuvre, and the ambivalence central to his view of political and social history.
