An extensive study of the history of the Roycroft community established in upstate New York in 1895 by American entrepreneur, writer and Arts and Crafts proponent Hubbard (1856-1915), this catalogue features illustrations of books, periodicals, furniture, metalwork, leather goods and other objects produced at Roycroft workshops primarily during the first two decades of the 20th century while also presenting paintings and drawings by artists affiliated with the community. Eleven essays discuss the development of the Roycroft enterprise, examine the output of its printing, furniture and other workshops, and link Hubbard's innovative promotion of the community's products and philosophy to the development of American consumer culture at the turn of the century.
