THE PICTOGRAPHS OF ADOLPH GOTTLIEB. Lawrence Alloway et al. Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., 1994. Organized by Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, New York. Published in association with Hudson Hills Press, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 128 ills. (62 col.). 31 x 23 cm. LC 94-21579 ISBN 1555951147 In English.
An extensive examination of the important series of more than 300 paintings and works on paper created by Gottlieb (1903-1974) from 1941 to 1953, this catalogue showcases 69 Pictographs that reflect the artist's exploration of grid formats and his use of calligraphic imagery derived from such diverse sources as Native American pottery, African sculpture, Greek vases and the symbolism of Jungian and Freudian psychology. Excellent reproductions of the featured works are prefaced by five essays (one reprinted) that include a discussion of the emergence of distinctly American modes of expression among New York artists of the 1930s, an evaluation of the influence of Gottlieb's interest in non-Western cultures on the imagery of the Pictographs, and an analysis of the importance of his innovative pictorial vocabulary and compositional techniques to the development of Abstract Expressionism.
