Documenting a major exhibition of Memling's portraits and religious tableaux, the first volume of this two-part catalogue features fine color reproductions and detailed analyses of 40 altarpieces and other paintings attributed to the renowned German-born Flemish master (ca. 1440-1494) along with a well-illustrated overview of his career in Bruges and thorough documentation of 57 works by Rogier van der Weyden, Stefan Lochner and many other precursors, contemporaries and followers of the artist. The second volume comprises 13 scholarly essays focusing on stylistic, iconographic and technical aspects of Memling's oeuvre, among them an evaluation of the artist's draughtsmanship as illuminated by the underdrawings of his paintings, an examination of his work in the context of 15th-century German panel painting traditions, a discussion of his local and international patrons, and a description of his critical fortunes from the 16th to the 20th century.
