JOCHEN GERZ: PEOPLE SPEAK. Gary Dufour and Roald Nasgaard. Vancouver Art Gallery, 1994. 128 pp. with 101 ills. (32 col.). 23 x 28 cm. LC 95-236683 ISBN 1895442206 In English.
Surveys the conceptually oriented oeuvre of noted German-born artist Gerz (b. 1940) through a presentation of some 45 works dating from 1968 to 1994, the selection including numerous photo-based installations in which serial or montaged images of people or the natural environment are juxtaposed with evocative texts by unidentified narrators. Two critical essays discuss Gerz's use of ambiguity as a means of disorienting and engaging the viewer and analyze the comically ironic character of his early performances and photo-text pieces.
