A scholarly study of the impressive collection assembled by Milanese cardinal Cesare Monti (1593-1650), this catalogue documents an exhibition of 98 paintings and some 20 drawings by Procaccini, Reni, Morazzone, Guercino, Correggio, Palma Giovane, Tintoretto and other artists of the 16th and early 17th centuries while also presenting illustrations and descriptions of 52 additional paintings from the collection that were not included in the show. Fine reproductions and lengthy analyses of the exhibited works (most now held in the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Galleria Arcivescovile) are prefaced by ten essays discussing such topics as Monti's career, his activities as a collector, and the artistic milieu of 17th-century Milan.
