An in-depth study of the art colony that flourished in rural Brown County, Indiana throughout the first half of the 20th century, this catalogue presents fine full-page reproductions of some 70 paintings and a small selection of works on paper by T.C. Steele (1847-1926), Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) and more than 20 other artists, including portraits, still lifes and genre pieces as well as numerous landscapes reflecting a distinctive regional style of impressionism. Two introductory texts detailing the origins and development of the Brown County colony are followed by 14 essays documenting the lives of the featured artists.
